What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also knows as periodontal disease, is something that 75% of people in the United States have had issues with. There are different varying degrees of gum disease, and it’s actually the most common reason that adults lose their teeth.
Gum disease is an infection in the gums, and therefore also in the bones once it gets to be rather severe. This causes bone loss down into and around each of the teeth. When that happens, bacteria gets into your bone and blood stream and can become a system problem, not just an oral problem.

Prevention: The Key to Reducing Your Risk

Improving oral health reduces systemic infection and inflammation, allowing the body to heal itself. Eliminating oral infections may lead to disease reversal. Studies suggest that nearly half of all heart attacks and ischemic strokes could be prevented with complete health dental treatment.

What is Treatment For Gums?

Gum disease is one of the most common dental disorders, affecting almost half of all people over the age of 30. Because it is so prevalent, treatment for gum disease is important and helps to improve the health of the gums and teeth. Gum disease often occurs due to improper brushing and flossing and failing to visit the dentist for long periods of time. As the disease itself progresses, pockets will form around each tooth, allowing plaque and bacteria to become lodged in these tight areas and making it difficult to keep your gums clean.

Why is Treatment For Gums needed?

If left untreated, your gum disease can and will lead to the eventual loss of tooth and bone. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss worldwide. As the disease progresses, the gums continually pull away from the teeth and the infection deteriorates the underlying bone. This causes the teeth to become loose to the point where they eventually fall out.

What can you expect with Gum Treatment?

One of the most common periodontal treatments available and used is a scaling and root planning. Often called a deep cleaning, the scaling and root planning is performed by a hygienist who works deep in the gum pockets to clear away plaque and debris. Along with these deep cleanings, we offer both pocket reduction surgery as well as bone grafting to help rebuild lost bone in the jaw area. We will conduct an examination to determine which treatment is best suited to your needs.
